Background

Many people in Morazán, especially women, suffer from the consequences of personal and historical violence – particularly the civil war – as well as from current experiences of social violence and stress. These stresses often manifest themselves in physical and mental health problems.

SANAR is tackling this challenge. The name says it all, standing for Salud, Apoyo, Non Violencia, Autonomía y Resiliencia – health, support, non-violence, autonomy and resilience.

Project Work

Through knowledge transfer (information and psychoeducation), practical guidance and networking opportunities, participants become aware of the importance of their mental health and are empowered to strengthen their resources. A key concern is enabling them to pass on these tools within their families, communities and networks (multipliers).

Another focus of SANAR is raising awareness of gender inequality, sexuality and contraception. This also includes support for victims of violence and networking with other affected individuals and additional support services.

Focus areas and future development

The SANAR project addresses mental health and gender equality issues. The first target group is women, who are empowered to promote their mental and physical health and pass on the knowledge they have acquired as multipliers within their families and communities.

Key Topics

Mental health and gender based violence

Objectives: To promote critical discussion about established power structures and gender roles in society; to raise awareness of the mechanisms that lead to discrimination and violence against women; to address sexuality; to promote an equal society in which everyone can develop their potential.

Psychoeducation and resilience

Objectives: Through psychoeducation and easy-to-learn tools, locally based women’s groups strengthen existing personal resources for self-care and resilience, promote autonomy (including economic autonomy) and build awareness of mental, physical and sexual health.

Contents include identifying and strengthening personal resources and resilience, practical tools for stress reduction and dealing with traumatic experiences, networking with other women and with support services.

Impressions from SANAR

This knowledge helps women to empower themselves and confidently pass on their skills to their communities.

In this video, Carmen impressively shares her personal experiences with Consciente. As a committed participant in the SANAR project, she has acquired methods and knowledge about self-empowerment, stress management and reproductive health, and shows how this knowledge can be effectively applied in everyday life.
